The myth of Drinking a lot of Water From Oriental Medicine

Many celebrities have said on TV and media that they have been drinking a lot of water daily.

Beyonce, who is an award-winning singer, drinks at least a gallon of water with lemon a day.

A supermodel, Karlie Kloss, quotes, “I LOVE drinking water. It’s perfect for you too. Did you know you are supposed to have at least 32 ounces before lunch??”

Yes, drinking water is essential to us as humans, and the lack of water in our bodies causes many health issues.

However, that’s not always the case in the perspective of Oriental Medicine. Some need to avoid drinking a lot of water.

Having excessive moisture can cause water intoxication, kidney failure, etc.

If you are in the following three categories, you are better off staying away from drinking gallons of water.

Symptom — congested throat, heavy body, loss of energy, headache, swollen, rash, diarrhea or constipation, foul-smelling stools, joint pain, cold intolerance, period pain, virginal discharge

If you are this type, you have old accumulated water in your body, so you need to detox.

Some tips are to exercise regularly to get sweat, humidify your room, and drink corn silk tea or black soybean tea.

Type 2 (Spleen Qi Deficiency):

Symptom — loss of appetite, indigestion, loss of energy, fatigue, cold intolerance, hypothermia, soft stool & diarrhea, pale face, heavy menstrual bleeding, but the blood color is bright red.

People with Type 2 are weak in digestion and energy, so drinking a lot of water makes your stomach even worse.

It may trigger chronic diarrhea, water intoxication, vomiting, etc. As a solution, you should drink hot beverages like Ginseng tea, eat foods that make your body warm such as potatoes, yams, beef, pork, chicken, beans, mushrooms, and avoid fried food & processed food.

Type3 (Kidney Yang Deficiency):

The symptom is feeling heavy on the lower body, cold intolerance on hands and feet, shortness of breath, lower back pain, poor hearing, loss of hair, loss of sex drive, Electile dysfunction, virginal discharge, and an irregular menstrual cycle.

If you currently have these symptoms, you are losing energy on organs, and it is usually hard to improve your condition even if you change your lifestyle.

I would recommend trying Chinese herbs. Visit YourKampo if you are interested in Chinese herbs.

Instead of drinking a gallon of water, here’re some tips for hydrating yourself (Apply to all types).

  1. Drink a cup of plain hot water in the morning right after waking up.
  2. Drink one between 3 pm to 5 pm
  3. 0.3~0.5 gallons should be enough
  4. Avoid cold water

You have to know your own body and shouldn’t rely on what your favorite celebrity says about health.

Sayonara till next post.
